Field Crossbow European Championships 2024 - Match Play Elimination

The European Championships continue with the second discipline - Match Play Individuals and Teams.

In Match Play, individual shooters are paired according to the results achieved in the IR900 discipline the day before. Within the seeded pair, shooters are shooting a series of 3, the shooter with a higher score gets 2 points and the losing shooter 0 points.  In case of a draw, shooters get 1 point each. The shooter who gets first five (5) points, is qualified for the next round and the duel is finished.

The programme of today's shooting are "best of 16" duels, quarterfinals and semi-finals. At the end of the competition day, participants of the bronze and gold medal matches (pairings) are determined. The medal matches are scheduled for Saturday, August 31st.

Letter to the National Crossbow Federations, participants of the IAU ECH Zagreb 2024

Letter from Mr. Dragutin Vrbek, President of Zagreb First Civil Crossbow Society Zagreb. This Society is the organizer of the IAU European Field Crossbow Championship in Zagreb from August 26 to September 1, 2024, and immediately after, from September 19 to 22, 2024, the IAU World Cup Final, all at the Hippodrome in Zagreb, Croatia.

World Cup Match Wil – last decisions before the World Cup Final

The Swiss Crossbow Shooting Federation (EASV) hosted the Match Crossbow community in the city of Wil, a proven location for top international events. The organisers offered a professionally managed competition on the highest quality level.

The Wil range is one of the few which offers both Match distances, 10m and 30m. The program included therefore two 30m starts and on 10m start to complete the World Cup Final qualifications.

This World Cup was the last competition of the Match Division to determine the qualifiers for the World Cup Final. The expectations were therefore high and the shooters have delivered some interesting and dramatic fight, sometimes putting favourites into the background and allowing less known athletes to take the podium.

Day One: The French take it (almost) all. And Compliments to the Judges.

Friday, 2nd August 2024: The first competition day had a packed schedule with three relays till the late evening. The shooting started with the 30m open class competition. In almost ideal conditions, with some subtle wind during the standing stage, two medals went to Swiss shooters - gold to Sven Bachofner (573) in his first World Cup victory ever and bronze to Monika Hurschler (566). For Monika, it was not the only medal, we will hear of her later. With silver for Michaël Dhalluin (571), the French medal collection just started.

In the afternoon and evening, competitions on the 10m distance continued. In the category of men, all three medals were collected by French shooters. Gold was taken by Michaël Dhalluin (395), silver by Romain Meignan (390) and bronze by Dimitri Dutendas (389). The ladies’ category marked another French victory – gold for Léna Giannini (394). Silver went to Germany - Katja Blos (390). Monika Hurschler earned her second medal, bronze for Switzerland (389).

The podium for 30m (1st day): 1st Bachofner Sven (SUI), 2nd Michaël Dhalluin (FRA), 3rd Monika Hurschler (SUI)

Michaël Dhalluin (FRA), Léna Giannini (FRA) - winners of the 10m competitions

Podiums of the 10m competitions:

Men - 1st Michaël Dhalluin, 2nd Romain Meignan, 3rd Dimitri Dutendas (all FRA)

Women - 1st Léna Giannini (FRA), 2nd Katja Blos (GER), 3rd Monika Hurschler (SUI)

Usually, if everything works well, nobody notices. Special thanks shall therefore go to the entire team of judges, especially the classification office. With results – manually scored! - available almost in real time just after finishing the series, they would surely break records, if there were any. The whole team of judges and organisers made the competition proceeding smooth and pleasant for everybody, especially for multiple starters going twice to he line on this day.

Day Two: New Seniors World Record. And Have Your Tools Ready.

Saturday was dedicated to the second 30m competition. Thunderstorm and rain the night before were suspected to be the reason why one defective transport mechanism caused the fuse for a part of the shooting line to go down repeatedly. The bad part – a burned down electric motor due to a short circuit – was found and fixed within 20 minutes thanks to Swiss team shooters having the appropriate tools at hand. The shooting started with a 30 min delay against the original schedule and finished without any further irregularities.

This time the Swiss team took it all, occupying the first four positions of the results list. Gold went to Joëlle Baumgartner (577). Monika Hurschler added a silver medal to her collection (576) and bronze was taken by Stephan Loretz (573). His result was instantly recognised as the new world record in the category of seniors.

Most succesful shooters in Wil - Monika Hurschler and Stefan Loretz (both SUI)

Podium of the 2nd day of 30m competitions: 1st Joëlle Baumgartner, 2nd Monika Hurschler, 3rd Stephan Loretz (all SUI).

After this competition, the ranking lists for determining the participants of the Match Division World Cup Finals (Strasbourg, 3rd-6th October) are stabilized. We are looking forward to know the best shooters of the 2024 season!
